Post U.S. Marine Corps to gender intergrate training platoons at Parris Island

The United States Marine Corps announced earlier today in a Press release, that MCRD Parris Island would intergrate females into the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, India Company, according to ABC News & The Island Packet. The change will take effect with the cycle that begins tomorrow.

(The Island Packet - Wade Livingston) “For the first time in its history, the Marine Corps will train men and women in the same barracks during boot camp, according to reports.

Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island — the only basic-training site for women in the Corps — will place one female platoon into the previously all-male 3rd Recruit Training Battalion during boot camp, according to a depot news release.

India Company of 3rd Battalion will be home to the female platoon, which will consist of about 50 female trainees, the release said. The company, which will also have five male platoons — bringing the unit’s size to 300 total trainees — is scheduled to start its training cycle Saturday.

(ABC News - Elizabeth McLaughlin) “Unlike the other services, the Marine Corps has not fully integrated women and men during recruit training. Instead, at Recruit Depot Parris Island in South Carolina, the first three battalions are all-male, while the fourth battalion is all-female.

Despite segregated male and female battalions, the Marine Corps has been increasing the amount of training men and women do together -- something ABC News saw first hand during a visit to Parris Island in February.

“The value of increasing the amount of integration that occurs between male and female recruits is that with increased exposure and socialization we address some of the attitudes that male recruits might have about female recruits and vice versa,” Lt. Col. Misty Posey, who leads the 4th Battalion, told ABC News during that visit.“

I think this is a good move for our military. The other four branches have intergrated their training and while in BCT for the Army in Fort Jackson, we trained along female soldiers all the time. I hope this works out well and this becomes common practice throughout Parris Island. If they do, that opens up MCRD San Diego for female recruits, as right now, it is only open to male recruits. All females report to Parris Island for boot camp.

    What’s everyone think?

While I think it's about time the Marines come into the 21st century, I'm wondering what impact it'll have on their training; at that age will they focus on their training or on each other? Living in the same barracks? Will they be in the same floor or segregated by sex into different floors? Lot of questions to be answered and only time will tell how well this will work out.

The article says that they will be in the same building but on different floors. As strict as the training is in the Marine Corps, especially with how the Drill Instructors are known hovering over them all day and night- I’m sure there won’t be any funny business. But of course, time will tell.

I'm glad that women are fighting for their right to participate in the empire. Invading and occupying foreign lands should be an equal opportunity occupation.

I can see the barracks falling apart from constant drilling through the woodwork.

The pilot program was merely after all and did not continue. We shall see what happens in the future.
