About individuals, groups and business entities, yes - but the important distinction lies in the fact that they are matters of civil law, not criminal.

This is a pretty lengthy explanation of American libel and slander laws, but it's very well written and quite accurate.

Thank you...I should have also noted that there are criminal statutes dealing with breaches of the peace, inciting to riot, etc., although the elements of those offenses, i.e., what facts and circumstances must be present for the offense to be actionable, differ greatly between here and the U.K.

So are you allowed to publish things that are untrue or defamatory about any person or group? What about things that cannot be proven to be true or untrue? Can you say that all Mexicans you have met have been liars and thieves, or that all the Brits you have met have bad teeth? In both cases you have ruined the public reputation of all Mexicans and Brits - is that legally acceptable?

Freedom is just a word for nothing left to lose...

Actually I don't believe that but freedom only exists under the constraints of oppression so it's an oxymoron if you think about it.

Freedom is the mind of a child, who is not yet conditioned or tainted by the world.
Freedom is loosening the binds of the mind that confine us.
Freedom is seeing the world as it is, not what the mind says it is.
Removing self imposed and conditioned invisible constraints, that to me is freedom.

Freedom is not having an elected president turn dictator.
Freedom is the right of a person to criticise another without being vilified for doing so.
Freedom is the right to decide if an abortion is in one's interest and then acting on the result without fear of consequences.
Freedom is the right to ask for an immediate execution after having been convicted, without having to wait 25 years for the inevitable.
Some countries have more freedom than others and the US is not at the top of the list, irrespective of what many Americans believe.
