Before Trumpís inauguration, a warning: ĎThe worst influenza pandemic since 1918'

In a tabletop exercise days before an untested new president took power, officials briefed the incoming administration on a scenario remarkably like the one he faces now.

"Seven days before Donald Trump took office, his aides faced a major test: the rapid, global spread of a dangerous virus in cities like London and Seoul, one serious enough that some countries were imposing travel bans.

In a sober briefing, Trumpís incoming team learned that the disease was an emerging pandemic ó a strain of novel influenza known as H9N2 ó and that health systems were crashing in Asia, overwhelmed by the demand.

ďHealth officials warn that this could become the worst influenza pandemic since 1918,Ē Trumpís aides were told. Soon, they heard cases were popping up in California and Texas.

The briefing was intended to hammer home a new, terrifying reality facing the Trump administration, and the incoming presidentís responsibility to protect Americans amid a crisis. But unlike the coronavirus pandemic currently ravaging the globe, this 2017 crisis didnít really happen ó it was among a handful of scenarios presented to Trumpís top aides as part of a legally required transition exercise with members of the outgoing administration of Barack Obama."

I'll bet if they'd taken it seriously, we might have been better prepared to take it seriously. Hopefully we've learned our lesson and in the future, take warning signs a little more seriously.

I noticed in today's White House briefing that when Pence spoke, for about 3 minutes, he mentioned "The President" or "President Trump" at least 12 times whereas he mentioned "coronavirus" once and that was in the last 10 words of his remarks.

Being serious is mentioning the coronavirus 12 times and the president once.

Agreed; most of us agree that Pence is nothing more than a yes man for Trump and it's obvious that Trump is in over his head so he uses Pence as much as he can. Trump never should have been elected however being the excellent salesman that he is, he convinced enough people to vote for him so we have to live with him until his term expires at the least.
